Why the deposit sits with a licensed payment institution, not with us

10 September 2026

A security deposit is the part of a tenancy landlords and tenants worry about most, because it usually sits with whoever is easiest to trust at the time — an agent's office account, a personal bank transfer, cash. If that person or company runs into trouble, the deposit is just another creditor claim.

Rentie is a technology platform, not a bank and not a payment service provider. Rent, deposits and payouts are collected, safeguarded and paid by a licensed payment institution under its own regulatory obligations — Rentie never holds client money at any point. The deposit is visible to both landlord and tenant in the app for the whole tenancy, and is released against the move-out report at the end of it.

That is the difference between "we promise to look after it" and "a regulated institution is required to look after it." The second one does not depend on anyone's goodwill.
